Brass Knuckle Corkscrew Helps Spill Some Claret

Written by admin on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 in gadgets.

Bourgeois Brass Knuckles are a product that would never make it into production outside of a David Cronenberg movie (my girlfriend mentioned something about Viggo Mortensen fighting naked in a sauna, but I don’t think she’s quite woken up yet).

Needless to say, this novelty corkscrew takes a dangerous weapon and actually makes it more deadly. It is, however, awesome, and I’m fairly certian I could use it to take down BoingBoing gadgets‘ John Brownlee and his rather wussy looking Ninja Tacks.

VIA’s Isaiah launches as Nano

Written by admin on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 in gadgets.

VIA’s exciting Isaiah processor, which we have been looking forward to for months has officially been dubbed the “Nano” family of processors. With the 64-bit, 65nm processor line VIA expects to offer up to four times the performance within the same power range as VIA’s C7 line while maintaining pin compatibility. This means C7-powered hardware, like small form-factor motherboards, subnotebooks, and UMPCs will will be able to get a substantial power boost without serious internal changes.

VIA has announced five models so far, which will scale from a TDP (max) of 5W-25W.

Griffin ships iPod / iPhone-compatible iTrip AutoPilot

It’s been a hot minute since Griffin Technology loosed a new iTrip, but the newest member of the family is one we can’t help but high-five. The iTrip AutoPilot not only charges and transmits ipod audio to your FM stereo, but it also does the same with Apple’s iphone. As expected, the device plugs into one’s cigarette adapter on one end while sliding into a Dock Connector on the other; the SmartScan technology will do its best to locate the clearest frequency for transmitting on, and it will then display said station so you can dial in with your radio. Set-top boxes could bottom out, thanks to Sony, NCTA deal

Written by admin on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 in gadgets.

That sound you hear may be the death knell for the set-top box/dust magnet in your home entertainment center. Sony and the National Cable and Telecommunications Association have announced an agreement that will place the cable companies’ technologies inside future Sony TV models. This will allow consumers to dial up ALL their cable channels, access video-on-demand and use interactive services without having to find a place for a steaming-hot cable box near the TV.

The nation’s largest cable companies - Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Charter, Cablevision and Bright House - are on board, and the pressure is now on Samsung, LG and other big-screen makers to follow Sony’s lead.

Solar powered Apple i-devices in the making?

Written by admin on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 in gadgets.

MacRumors discovered a patent application that shows that Apple is looking into integrating solar power into their handhelds and laptops. The most interesting part of this, apart from the green benefits, is that the solar panel could be potentially integrated into the LCD screen themselves, laying right under the glass and LCD layers of the screens.

If Apple pulls this off, this could be the move that gets me to switch my laptop to a Mac. I’m hardly a Windows zealot, but application support has had me sticking to Win32 for a long time, and now that XP has proven its relative stability, I hardly care to switch (the pretty graphics don’t tempt me).

Review: Katana LX by Sanyo

Written by admin on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 in gadgets.

Here at Geek.com we normally focus on smartphones, but lately there have been quite a few non-smartphone handsets hitting the market that are worth a second look, even by a geek like me. One of those is the Katana LX by Sanyo.

What makes the Katana LX geeky is its slim design and mirrored finish, complete with a translucent OLED display on the front cover, which shows the time, the date, signal strength, battery status, and more. It’s actually one of the cooler implementations I’ve seen since when it’s not active you’d never know there was a screen there.
