Google’s Annual Food Bill: $72 million

Written by admin on Saturday, April 26th, 2008 in gadgets.

Silicon Alley Insider estimates that Google spends an average of over $7500 per employee per year on free food, assuming that each meal costs $30. That works out to over $72 million per year!

Is that worth it? Apart from considering how large their profit margins are and what a great perk does for employee morale, also consider this: given that a huge portion of Googlers make salaries north of $75k, a perk that costs 10% of that is easily worth it if those employees put in even 1 more hour of work per day.

China tops the world for most Internet users
China has moved past the U.S. to become the world’s largest group of Internet users. Over 221 million Chinese currently use the Internet, which is up over 10 million from last year. “Despite a rapidly increasing Internet population, the proportion of Internet users among the total population was still lower than the global average level.” said the Chinese Information Ministry” As a whole 16-percent of China’s population are Internet users, compared to an average of 19.1-percent for the world’s total population. All things considers that is a lot of users especially considering the Chinese government heavily censors the net, using a complex system of filters as well as human monitors. Walter Bender speaks out about leaving OLPC, de-emphasis of radical projects
by Darren Murph, posted Apr 25th 2008 at 9:54AM What do you know? The former OLPC head of software and content did indeed resign at least partially over NickNeg’s growing fondness of Windows XP. In a recent soul-spilling interview with xconomy, Walter Bender made clear that he resigned his post at the non-profit due to the general de-emphasis of “radical projects like Sugar,” the innovative XO user interface which Mr. Bender was unsurprisingly neck-deep in during his stay. France says Fiber-Optic Cabling is a must

Written by admin on Saturday, April 26th, 2008 in gadgets.

As much as this seems like too much government to me, there’s a part of me that wishes I lived in France where the French government is requiring builders to install fiber-optic cabling in new apartment complexes. The goal is that by 2010, all buildings with more than 25 apartments should be wired for broadband.

WiFi adapter makes you scream “I have got to get me one of these!”

WiFi adapter makes you scream “I have got to get me one of these!”
Remember the scene in INDEPENDENCE DAY when Jeff Goldblum places a satellite like dish on the roof of his dad’s car and triangulates the signal of his wife’s cellphone to determine where she was in the White House? His dad asks him how he can do that and he replies “all cable repair men know how to do this, pop.” Well, the Hi-Gain USB Wireless-300N Dish Adapter from Hawking Technologies won’t triangulate a signal in the White House, but it will boost weak WiFi signals in areas where a signal isn’t very strong to begin with. With a supports range of nearly 4,000 feet, this 802.11n capable antenna can extend a wireless network up to six times its range and claims a data throughput 12 times the average for transfer speeds in excess of 300Mbps. Gryphon goes on a diet, gets ready for war
Back in 06 we reported on the ESG Gryphon Personal Flying Wing, and it had military applications written all over it, or, a cool opening scene to the next James Bond Flick. The latest version, rechristened the Gryphon Attack Glider by SPELLCO (the new company name), has slimmed down the weight by 30 pounds and also offers the ability to carry up to 100 pounds of onboard gear and even carry weapons hard points for mini missiles and bombs. Yowsa. And with a maximum glide speed of 135 MPH, that makes this not only an attack glider, but a serious special ops platform for attacking well behind enemy lines. Pilots wear a specially designed helmet that offers a heads-up display and provides on-board oxygen for those high altitude HALO JUMPS. F1 Metal USB Drive

F1 Metal USB Drive
Here’s something you can use as a Monopoly piece - a metal F1 car that actually carries some internal flash memory within. Unlike its real world counterpart, I don’t think that the speed of its data transfers are anything to shout about. It is available for $10.93 a pop with a catch - you’ll need to order at least 500 pieces in order to get that price for 2GB worth of portable memory.
