Kodak ESP 5 All-in-One Printer

Written by admin on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in gadgets.

Kodak has just released the ESP 5 All-in-One Printer that is touted to offer the “latest in design and performance, providing a high quality, easy-to-use printing system.” It will utilize a 2-cartridge setup consisting of a full black cartridge and a five-ink color cartridge which retail for £6.99 and £9.99, respectively. I personally prefer the older Canon cartridges that use individual color tanks since those will help you save money in the long run. Other features of the ESP5 include a 3″ color LCD display, a memory card slot, and USB ports for easy printing options if you do not happen to have a computer in the vicinity. The Kodak ESP 5 will retail for £129.99.

TIPA Photography Award Winners Announced: Nikon Goes Away Happy

TIPA Photography Award Winners Announced: Nikon Goes Away Happy
The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has announced to results of the annual camera Oscars. The European awards are coveted by manufacturers, mostly because they get to stick the TIPA logo on the camera box and thereby shift more units. This year, Nikon scooped the Pro and Expert categories with the D3 and D300 respectively. We know that both are good, and probably the two main reasons that Nikon is gaining ground against its old rival Canon. Canon, though, also managed to win a gong for the best “advanced” DSLR with its EOS 450D, not a bad feat as for a camera that started shipping a few days ago. Check the link for the full list of winners. (Read the full post about ‘TIPA Photography Award Winners Announced: Nikon Goes Away Happy’…)

News Corp. corporate spying lawsuit hears hacker’s testimony

Written by admin on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in gadgets.

Currently there is a court battle being waged in southern California between News Corp’s NDS Group and DISH Network Corp. EchoStar, which has now divided into EchoStar and DISH, started the corporate spying lawsuit against NDS with claims they were developing software to hack into the DISH network and steal their security codes. The desired outcome being pirated smart cards becoming available and therefore costing DISH an estimated US$900 million in revenue and replacement costs.

In the ongoing case Christopher Tarnovsky has been testifying. He is the hacker who NDS reportedly employed to do the network infiltration for them.

GPS Logger Tracks Your Mail

Written by admin on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in gadgets.

GPS Logger Tracks Your Mail
The GPS mail logger tracks itself. The idea is that you slide it into an envelope to discover why your mail is being delayed. The logger can be set to record positioning data at timed intervals or when it detects movement. It looks fairly easy to use, and integrates with Google Earth, but we see problems. One, it costs $700. Two, what if it gets lost in the mail. There would be a supreme irony in losing a GPS tracker in the post (the data is recorded to a MicroSD card, not beamed directly to the owner). Three, even if your mail is going astray, what do you do? Call up the postal service and complain that the mail van was stuck in traffic for two hours? No. (Read the full post about ‘GPS Logger Tracks Your Mail’…)

Want to save XP? Send Microsoft feedback, says Ballmer

Written by admin on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in gadgets.

Alas, there may be yet a glimmer of hope in saving Windows XP according to a recent report by Reuters. During a recent news conference in Belgium, Microsoft bigwig Steve Ballmer said that customer input could be the key to rescuing XP from its current end-of-life schedule.

“XP will hit an end-of-life. We have announced one. If customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter, but right now, we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments,” stated Ballmer during the news conference. So it would seem, according to Ballmer, not enough people have spoken up to change Microsoft’s mind on the destiny of XP.

British Ad-Supported Phone Service Gains 100,000 Subscribers

British Ad-Supported Phone Service Gains 100,000 Subscribers
One day, we will pay for nothing. All goods and services will be ad-supported. This will continue until the only advertisements are for more ad-supported services. Then, late one Monday afternoon, sometime in 2012, the Singularity will occur, snakes will swallow their own tails and, born from the collapse of reality, a second big-bang will birth the Googleverse. At least, that’s the first thing that popped into my mind when reading that in Britain, a free, ad-supported mobile phone service has hit 100,000 subscribers in just six months. Blyk gives away text messages and calls in return for text and video ads (this is one case where it pays to have a crappy low tech cellphone). LG Secret Announced

LG Secret Announced
LG’s third model in its Black Label series, the LG Secret, has just been announced today. The LG Secret holds the honor of being the slimmest 5 megapixel cell phone in the market, boasting a chassis made out of carbon fibre and tempered glass that offers durability without compromising on its sleek design. Will this 3G handset be able to stave off the 3G iPhone’s onslaught later this summer? I personally don’t think so - after all, Apple has done a phenomenal job with its 3G-less iphone, so to have an iPhone that does 3G will just blow the competition away, unless Apple decides to over-price its product. Twenty Four Core Render Farm In IKEA Cabinet

Written by admin on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in gadgets.

Twenty Four Core Render Farm In IKEA Cabinet
If you want something cheap, make it yourself. Freelance 3D artist Janne Jansson took IKEA’s flatpack philosophy to heart when he decided to build his own render farm. He had no problem with dropping the cash for the six Quad Core Intel CPUs, or the 48GB of RAM, or even the motherboards and wiring to hold it all together, but when he came to buying the boxes to keep it all in, he balked: But this was a big problem. 6x cases cost almost as much as the motherboards and CPU’s! So here was some room for improvement. So what did he do? Being a good Swede, he hopped over to the local IKEA and grabbed a $40 Helmer cabinet. The six drawers were perfect for the six PCs.
