LifeAt.com: social networking site for apartment dwellers who want to meet their neighbors
LifeAt.com is a funny but interesting online social networking concept. Rather than trying to connect you with people in distant places, people you would never expect to run into in real life, this site connects you with people who you might see in the elevator in your apartment building or bump into in the parking garage on your way home - people who are already around you but with whom you may not have any immediate natural occasion to connect. This New York-based business attempts to make your neighborhood (your apartment building, that is) feel . . . neighborly. It’s a “modern twist on the community bulletin board, the self-proclaimed neighborhood gossip, the welcome wagon, and the earmarked local busines (Read the full post about ‘LifeAt.com: social networking site for apartment dwellers who want to meet their neighbors’…)

Shop online via SMS with Amazon’s TextBuyIt

Written by admin on Friday, April 4th, 2008 in gadgets.

I always check online store prices before heading out to a local retail store to buy that shiny new gadget I’ve been eyeing. Sometimes, things are just cheaper online. Thankfully, Amazon is making my shopping a little easier with its new text-messaging shopping service, called TextBuyIt. The new mobile service enables consumers to shop for products on Amazon by sending a text message through their cell phone. The service works in three simple steps:

  1. Send a text message to 262966 (AMAZON) with the name of the desired product, ISBN, UPC number, or a search keyword.
  2. Amazon will then reply to your text message with two search results including prices.

Theft Proof Bike: A Conceptual Red Rag To a Bull

Written by admin on Friday, April 4th, 2008 in gadgets.

Calling something “theft-proof” is like calling something “hack-proof”. As the Blu-ray inventors found out, it’s an open invitation to be proved wrong. Hubris aside, the TheftProof bike looks like a very smart concept.

Many cyclists remove the saddle and lock it to the frame. The TheftProof makes a virtue of this normally tiresome task and integrates a cable and lock into the seat, which can be removed to secure the wheels to the frame. You won’t want to use the cable to lock-down the actual bike: cables are too susceptible to cutting, but as a neat two-in-one solution, we like it.

Nike launches Nike+ SportBand; as expected
Nike has officially announced its new Nike+ SportBand, which will be available on April 10. When we mentioned the Sportband a couple of days ago, there was a very limited amount of information about it yet, so we didn’t expect that aside from launching an uber cool gizmo specifically for runners, Nike was also launching the SportBand with its online runner’s coaching system – the Nike+ Coach. If that sounds familiar to you, well that’s because Adidas has a similar service in partnership with Samsung, the Adidas Mi Coach which utilizes mobile handsets instead of the SportsBand.  As expected, the Nike+ SportBand is just like the previous Nike+iPod. Amazon launches TextBuyIt

Written by admin on Friday, April 4th, 2008 in gadgets.

A cell phone is but a communications device at heart, capable of doing a little bit extra such as surfing the Internet, running IM programs, checking your mail, capturing your favorite memories in a digital photo and playing video and audio files when you’re bored, right? Well props to online shopping pioneer Amazon.com who clearly aims to pile on the pressure (and potentially, misery) upon its brick-and-mortar rivals by offering a new online shopping service known as TextBuyIt, letting Amazon account holders to just about search virtually all products on Amazon’s website with the option to purchase whatever captures their fancy.

According to Howard Gefen, director of Amazon Mobile Payments, “With today’s launch of TextBuyIt, any Amazon.com customer can now use any mobile device to shop and buy from Amazon.com, at anytime, anywhere they are.

Panasonic Bring Plasma To Cell Phones

Written by admin on Friday, April 4th, 2008 in gadgets.

Panasonic ain’t too shabby when it comes to plasma displays - after all, they’re the ones with the monster 150″ display at this year’s CES.This time, they’re bringing a new iteration of its plasma technology to cell phones, aiming to take on OLEDs as well as other display technologies found in handheld and mobile devices. Surprisingly, this new small sized plasma display sips a mere 1.5 volts of power and is pretty close in terms of thickness and weight when compared against other portable displays. Panasonic also claims that this display boasts richer color and contrast ratios than most LCDs. The first plasma-enabled Panasonic cell phone will be made available in Japan sometime in the near future.

Originally, RIM’s blackberry Pearl 8110 was officially available to North American customers through Canada’s Rogers. However, the Pearl 8110 will now be heading to US soil through AT&T’s network.  Judging by the press shots that Boy Genius managed to grab, the 8110 will come in two colors: red or grey. Highlights include: Web browsing and email functionality, GPS, QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 2-megapixel camera with video recording. Unfortunately, the phone does not have Wi-Fi, instead EDGE connectivity is supported.
